Dun, dudda, dah.... The Pinewood Derby!

Let's stick with the positive things first, shall we?  Ryan loved making his car.  He knew he wanted to make a Star Wars Speeder right away.  I was a bit skeptical of how we were going to turn a Star Wars Speeder into a car, but he knew exactly what he wanted and he made it happen!  He designed it, Shan cut out the car, he picked out the paint colors and helped me paint it, and he hot glued his beloved C3PO to the seat.  The silver dollars were added at the last minute to make weight, but they actually looked pretty great.

And Mr. C3PO won 3rd place!
For the rest of the story, I will go lightly... let's just say that yours truly was in charge of the Pinewood Derby this year.  My personal nightmare to be sure.  But I didn't know how nuts it would be until we got there and there were people weighing their cars, glue and weights and coins being added and parents who cheated to make their son's car go faster.  Ugh.  We had disputes among the parents and parents who wanted us to disqualify cars, and cars that broke during the races.  And each and every boy obviously wanted their car to be first.  Let's just say it was a little intense.  I came home and collapsed.

First, congrats to Ryan. Second, you need to do a better job of choosing what you'll be in charge of; a derby, referring adults at a kids event and/or the possible desire to crack adult heads lol. Pinewood Derbies should not have adults allowed in the audience, until after the race has been run. There's something about the derbies that tends to bring out the inner "idiot factor." I believe I can speak from experince. Ty built his car. Bill helped a boy with an absent father.I was disappointed that Ty's car came in behind the 1st place car (the one Bill helped build). I didn't make a public display, but I remember being miffed at Bill afterwards. Yes, I can be an idiot.

Great story Jean. I can only imagine trying to suck it up...
Thanks for sharing the inside scoop Marisa. Sort of pathetic. Thank goodness most of that stuff goes over the boys heads. Ryan's car is a beautiful thing. He has class and style.
I remember wishing there was a derby for girls when I was that age.

hey...i was in charge of our pinewood derby too, but my ward is so laid back about it (mostly). Try having two brothers racing against each other. The younger doing well, and the older trying his best to keep his happy face on. My grade for the pinewood derby is who's car looks the coolest, and since the older brother's car looked cooler, it was okay that the younger brother's car was faster. Live and learn!! And make sure your rules are clearly posted before the derby...it saves a lot of headaches later.
